St Michael's Cottage, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk
Looking for a cottage on the North Norfolk coast that's suited to a larger group? The stunning St Michael's Cottage, in the port town of Wells-next-the-Sea, sleeps up to 11 people and even comes with its own lookout tower.
This former merchant's house is set on a quiet road in Wells-next-the-Sea, just a minute's walk from the harbour (and within easy reach of the beach). One of the oldest buildings in the town, it dates back to the 16th century and offers coastal holiday accommodation for up to 11 people (including 2 children), with five bedrooms set out over four floors.
On the ground floor of St Michael's Cottage, an entrance hallway leads to the sitting room and the kitchen and diner. The spacious sitting room is actually laid out across two levels, with a raised library area with a large armchair up a set of steps. The lower area contains a TV, DVD player, CD player and ambience-setting woodburner.
The kitchen and diner offers a relaxed atmosphere for meal preparation, with underfloor heating to keep you comfortable. A built-in electric oven, electric hob, microwave, fridge with icebox and dishwasher are all here, as well as an extendable dining table to seat up to 10 people. Up a couple of steps is a utility area equipped with a washing machine and a freezer, and next door is a shower room with a shower cubicle and WC.
On the first floor is a double bedroom and a twin bedroom, as well as a family bathroom containing a bath with shower attachment and a separate shower cubicle.
The second floor hosts the master bedroom, which contains a king-size bed and a comfortable sofa. Converted from the sail loft of the old building, this room is rich with character, with its exposed brickwork and ceiling beams giving a real sense of the building's heritage. Also on this floor, accessed through either of the bedrooms on the first floor, is another twin bedroom with two 2'6" single beds, as well a 3' single bed. This bedroom shares an en-suite bathroom, containing a shower over bath, with the master bedroom.
On the third floor you'll find a TV room which can also serve as a fifth bedroom. This fantastic media room has a Smart TV as well as comfortable furniture and beanbags. The sofa can be converted into a 4ft double sofa bed, allowing the property to sleep up to 11 people, though note that this bed is only suitable for children. Request extra linens when booking if you wish to make use of this.
One really special feature of this property is the lookout tower accessible from the third floor TV room/bedroom. Offering spectacular views across the rooftops to the sea and the nearby marsh, it's ideal for birdwatching or just drinking in the surroundings, and is outfitted with a stool and small desk, as well as a telescope and/or binoculars and under-sill lighting.
If you'd like to spend some time relaxing outside on sunny days, the property has an enclosed south-facing paved courtyard where you'll find outdoor furniture and a barbecue for your use.
