Higher Lodge, Cockington, nr Torquay, Devon
Cockington (near Torquay), Devon
Higher Lodge is a traditional, listed thatch-roofed cottage which sleeps up to 4 guests. Located in Cockington in Devon, on the site of what was once the gatehouse to the historic Cockington Estate, this is a fantastic place to enjoy a break in what is now a spectacular country park.
Enjoy a relaxing break in this beautiful, traditional cob cottage, located on a site which dates back to the early 17th century. You can really feel the history as you relax in this charming holiday home. The historic Cockington Estate on which the cottage is built is part of the Agatha Christie Literary Trail, since she visited often when young and one of her books, Why Didn't They Ask Evans?, was dedicated to the former owners.
The unique, timbered property is nestled in the corner of the 460 acre country park, which is a designated wildlife site and overlooks the Estate’s cricket grounds and arboretum. Guests at the property have access to the park at all times and can wander through the apple orchard, feed the ornamental carp at the lakes of the ancient monastery, visit the Norman church, explore the manor house and its gardens or watch an afternoon cricket match during the summer months. The outbuildings of the manor house contain an acclaimed craft centre where all year round local tradespeople are engaged in glassblowing, ironmongery, painting and chocolate making with their unique wares on sale. To the east of Cockington lies the seafront, about half a mile’s walk away across the countryside.
Cockington itself is an ancient fishing and farming village in a small valley and is estimated to be around 2500 years old. Visitors will find within a short walk of the property charming tea houses, small local shops and a large ale house designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. These are all scattered among numerous old thatched houses and medieval remains, making Cockington one of the most beautiful and most photographed villages in England. A visit to Cockington is a step back in time.
