Uber offers a cashless taxi service with an online booking capability where customers are quoted the price in advance of the journey. This saves you from the inevitable praying to the taxi meter gods that the price will not exceed your last remaining 10-pound note.

There is even a feature which allows you to split the cost with friends and the app will charge each of passengers' credit cards equally. What more could you want!? For the stranded traveller on a budget this app is a life saver.

Am I Going Down?

This amusing app is not perhaps the most essential application and certainly not for the nervous flyer but can be used as an effective tool to wind up your travelling companions.

The app has all the latest safety data and pointing out that your plane is 0.5% more likely to make it than your friends who are catching the next flight, offers endless material for the wind-up merchant.

Wi-Fi Finder

If, when you arrive in an unfamiliar place, you immediately start hunting down the Wi-Fi password like a particularly assiduous bloodhound then this is the app for you.

Wi-Fi Finder is particularly useful when you’re on the go and includes features which allows users to search for Wi-Fi in the immediate area or do an advance search to find Wi-Fi hotspots where you plan to go. The results are set out in a logical, attractive manner and the app is easy to use. Instagram addicts, twitter tarts and selfie queens can rest easy knowing that Wi-Fi access is never far away.

Drunk Dial No

There is nothing worse than waking up from a great night out only to discover you’ve accidentally broken up with your significant other, told your boss exactly what you think of them or woken your parents up at 4 in the morning. In order to avoid the hangover from hell the ‘Drunk Dial No’ app is the way forward.

A funny meme with the words "And that, my friend, is what they call closure!"

The way in which the app works is beautifully simple. Choose which contact numbers to hide and set the hours they need to remain hidden. For quick use, you can save a group of contacts which you can hide all at once when heading out for the night.

This app is particularly useful when in a foreign country or if your friends are in a foreign country as you won’t end up with a phone bill the size of Australia. For holiday boozers this app is a lifesaver.

World Mate

Organisers of the world, put the sticky notes down and step away from the paper trail, World Mate is one of the best ways to organise your trip. Send all your confirmations of flights, trains, restaurant bookings and theatre tickets to the app and World Mate will arrange your itinerary for you.

If you’ve booked a flight the app will inform you of any delays or alternative flights or if you’re using it away on business, World Mate will notify you when you happen across any of your LinkedIn contacts. For peace of mind and handy access to all of your transport and itinerary details, World Mate is a must have travel app.

 Sit or Squat

Everybody knows that as soon as you really need the bathroom, all toilets mysteriously disappear or display an ‘out of order' sign.

The Sit or Squat app can help you in your time of need, finding you the nearest clean toilet in the area. The display shows a map of the area where you can search for nearby toilets. Green is for clean (sit) and red is for squat/enter at your own peril/ you may never be the same again.

This life saver is fantastic when exploring a new area and particularly great reassurance for people with medical difficulties.
