The Cornish countrysideSt Austell, with its bustling streets, is abundant with markets, cafes and high-quality restaurants offering many fantastic eating experiences for food fanatics on holiday in Cornwall. Explore the wonders of this traditional town and sample the local delicacies on offer – you’ll want to return time and time again.

Authentic Dishes

There are a number of famous regional dishes that can be located in and around St Austell, including Cornish Cherry Chocolates, Figgy 'obbin and Hevva Cake. Hevva Cake is a fisherman’s treat and was popular when the pilchard industry was thriving. Traditionally, the cake is decorated with a criss-cross pattern to represent the fishing nets. Figgy ‘obbin is a simple, traditional pastry filled with raisins (not figs). The pastry is rolled, baked and cut into rectangles before being served.

You will be able to find these traditional treats around the local markets or bakeries in the town – there’s no better place to try them than where they were originally created!

Bottles of drinkPopular local drinks include Aunt Elly’s Nog, Cornish Mine Punch and Cornish Spiced Mead, but it’s not just the traditional drinks that are among Cornwall’s most renowned – St Austell Brewery have recently appointed Jack Stein (son of TV chef Rick Stein) as their brand ambassador for Proper Job beer, and its popularity is fast-growing! Head to a local bar to sample this refreshing beverage.
