Kilronan Castle, County Roscommon, County Roscommon,
The name ‘Kilronan’ comes from the Gaelic ‘Cill Ronain’ meaning Ronan’s Abbey and its ruins can be found near Kilronan Castle.Kilronan Castle is in the county of Roscommon in Eire, famed in ancient times for its music. Indeed, Ireland’s greatest harpist, Turlough O’Carolan, who played for Irish Chieftains is buried nearby. Over the years, artists, poets and musicians including Yeats and Kavanagh flourished here too and today the region remains a draw for people who are interested in the arts.Today, the approach to Kilronan Castle is made along a very grand, tree-lined drive with views of the lake and wooded grounds on either side.
The original castle at the heart of the resort has been restored by experts in stonework, stained glass and ancient crafts and its interior is filled with original antiques and precious items, including a French 19th Century fireplace. Situated just a three minute stroll from the castle are the estate’s self-contained holiday homes at Carolan’s Court.
They are an excellent base for a family holiday, sleeping 5 people in a double bedroom with ensuite, a twin and single room. The holiday homes also have open plan living and dining rooms and fully fitted kitchens.
The castle itself has a fine dining restaurant, The Douglas Hyde Restaurant, named after the first Irish president who was born in the county. A holiday at Kilronan Castle offers plenty of pampering for mum and amusement for all the family; in addition to the luxury spa on the estate which has a range of indulgent half, full day and personalised treatments available for men and women and the indoor pool, there is golf nearby as well as boating, riding and fishing. And if the weather is unkind, indoor amusements include a cinema, sculpture centre, bowling and museums close by.
