Family Holiday Tips

It is this time of year where many of us our preparing for a well deserved family holiday in the UK or abroad. But there is nothing worse than your holidays starting on the wrong foot. Many of us have found ourselves having a nightmare start to a holiday where anything that could go wrong, has gone wrong. This has been caused by the children playing up or making a mess, trouble with your journey or time keeping, plus many other scenarios.
Whether you plan to travel by car, air, train or boat to your self catering holiday lodge, this following blog will give you tips on how to avoid certain situations and allow you to be prepared if the inevitable problem occurs.

Setting off on your journey

  • Prepare early and leave home earlier than you think. There is nothing worse than having a problem occurring with the children in the morning which means you leave later. Also, knowing your luck you may be delayed because of traffic or cannot find a parking space, which means if you were on your way to the airport, you would be in a rush to get to check-in in time.
  • If you leave early enough, plan to stop off somewhere for a toilet break or somewhere you and the kids can stretch your legs.

Packing

  •  Have little backpacks for the children. They can then carry their own toys and bits and pieces. This is better than mini children’s luggage and will be easier if you are in a rush or if you have a lot of walking to do.

Clothing and Accessories

  • Take a small blanket to sit on or to wrap around the children if they are cold.
  • Pack extra nappies than you anticipate.
  • Pack spare baby clothes in your hand luggage in case your baby has been sick or have soiled themselves.
  • Try dressing your children in the same colour as they will easier to spot if amongst a crowd.
  • Highly recommended are Calpol Sachets. Easy to use and easy to throw away.

Pushchairs

  • Airports usually either let you take your pram through the departure lounge to air side, where you can then have the pram loaded from there or some airports provide airport prams. But it is best to check in advance to avoid disappointment.
  • A baby carrier rather than a pram is also recommended. This will allow your baby to sleep in peace, instead of being awoken by having to carry a pram up or down steps.

Food and drink

  • Taking a picnic with you is a great way to break up your journey and will also keep your kids occupied for a few minutes. But if you are flying, please remember that airport security do not allow you to take food or fluids through. So you will have to eat and drink before hand and possibly buy air side.
  • It is recommended that if you buy snacks for the kids, buy them fiddly ones and ones that won’t cause much mess, as it will keep them occupied for longer.
  • Try and reserve milk formula for the flight beforehand. Boots, usually offer sterile bottles which can be purchased past security sacrilegious.

Distractions

Long journeys or having to wait for your plane can be long and tiresome. This can be even more hard work if you have to keep children entertained. Below are some suggestions on what to take with you to make those waiting hours fly by.

  • With the development of new technology, portable DVD players or other hand held devices are a god send and will keep children occupied for hours.
  • Don’t forget to take loose change with you as I’m sure the children will be attracted to the arcade games and rides.
  • If you have a long wait, letting the kids release their energy is not a bad thing as it means they will sleep on the plane. So maybe let them run and play nearby or even take a blow up beach ball for them to play with.

Departure Time

If you are at the airport awaiting your plane and you hear your flight get called, please take these following points into consideration.

  • Once your flight is called there is usually a mad scramble. If you are flying with a no-frills airline it may be worth booking priority boarding in advance which would allow you to skip the queues and be guaranteed seats next to each other.
  • If you are guaranteed a certain seat on the plane, then it may be worth just taking your time. There is no point standing in a long queue and waiting for an extra 20 minutes. This is a perfect time to take the children to the toilet as once on board the plane you will be forced to wait until the plane is airborne.
  • Also, don’t be positioned too far away from the check in gate. The last thing you want to do is to make a late dash to the plane and get all flustered.
