Keldy, Nr Pickering, North Yorkshire
Mile upon mile of moorland trails for hiking, cycling, orienteering and pony trekking across this rugged, yet verdant landscape; this sums up the North York Moors National Park. If you’d like to get out and experience this wilderness for a few days or longer, returning each evening to your comfortable log cabin and blissfully warm bed, then Keldy on the edge of the National Park is for you.
The forest is a spectacular sight whatever the season and, with the exception of the period between Christmas and New Year, you can stay at any time. In spring, the colours are predominantly yellows and greens, changing to deep blues and greens in high summer before mellowing to rich reds and gold in autumn.
The place is also a haven for birds, animals, flowers and fungi. Keldy’s on site rangers will advise on forest trails that you can explore on foot or with a hired mountain bike – tag-alongs can also be provided for children too. The Rangers also organise different activities that can inspire you and the family to discover and understand more about the habitats around you. These sessions include Dusk Watch, Night Vision, Amazing Animals and Into the Wild.
Other facilities include barbecue and play areas, games room with table tennis and pool and Forest Ranger Room where young children can practise their skills at artworks focused on the forest. At Keldy, you are 24 miles from the seaside at Scarborough and only seven miles from Pickering where there’s a leisure centre with pool, shops and, best of all, the wonderful North York Moors Steam Railway. The Forestry Commission Visitor Centre and Go Ape! Centre are 13 miles away.
